With two locations on the Southside of Hampton Roads, Mermaid Winery features limited production wines made from grapes sourced from premier vineyards in Virginia and California that focus on the characteristics of each varietal. You can find their flagship store in the charming neighborhood of Ghent in Norfolk and the Chix Beach area on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach. In addition to producing their own wines, Mermaid Winery is also a wine bar & restaurant that features over 800 different wines from around the world to taste with some of the best food pairings in the region. Both locations are closed on Monday.
Virginia Beach Winery is a family-owned winery that features locally made wines made in small batches right here in Virginia Beach. Made in stainless steel tanks, the winery sources their grapes mostly from California, with their Carmenere coming from Chili and their Pinot Grigio coming from Italy. Virginia Beach Winery offers free delivery (within 10 miles), scheduled pick-ups, and $5 wine tastings offered 7 days a week.
Vintner's Cellar Winery of Yorktown is a family-owned, urban winery located in historic Yorktown, Virginia, and to this day is the only winery in Yorktown. Originally a place where the local community could gather to learn winemaking, the shop has grown into much more than that and now offers a storefront tasting room and production space where they handcraft an upward of 40 wine varietals, specializing in fruit-infused wines. Currently, their tasting room is only open for wine pickups and ticketed events.
Inspired by Europe’s finest estates, the Williamsburg Winery is located across the gently rolling hills on the southern side of Williamsburg proper and is well known throughout the Hampton Roads region and beyond for their wines boasting great character. Guests of the Williamsburg Winery enjoy the best food and wine the region has to offer in their tasting room, restaurants, and inns along with picturesque views of the historic land and quiet surroundings. Can’t make it to the winery? Their wines are available throughout many retail stores across the region, so be sure to pick up a bottle to try for your next romantic night in.
Last but certainly not least on our list of favorite wineries in Hampton Roads is SummerWind Vineyard in Smithfield, Virginia. Located between the James and the Pagan Rivers in Isle of Wight County, SummerWind Vineyard has been growing grapes since 2005 when the wine industry in Virginia was emerging into what it is today. They now proudly grow Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Petit Mansang, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, and Chardonel and supply wine grapes to Holly Grove Winery, Williamsburg Winery, Tarara Winery, and Smithfield Winery. SummerWind Vineyard offers a casual tasting room, a fire pit area, and a bistro-style menu that changes every few weeks. Tastings are available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with hours that vary seasonally.
We hope you enjoy this list of our favorite wineries in Hampton Roads and have a safe and fun “National Drink Wine” Day!
